Competition

The following opportunities exist to participate in competitive tennis of variable levels, against comparable players, teams or other tennis clubs within the WDTA.

Night Tennis - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening

As of 2008, Night Tennis has grown immensely and has become more popular year after year due to its convenience. The different forms of night tennis include;

Monday

Format: Triples

Costs: $5 for members or $10 for non-members, per night

Frequency of play: On average around once or twice every two weeks

Teams consist out of 12 players (member or non-member) ranked 1 to 4 based on their ability, on which 6 play on game night.

This is ideal for people who want to play singles and doubles, and the numbers of players will allow for people to be absent if they need to.

Starting times are flexible at 6.45 or 8.30pm.

Players are scheduled to play one singles set and two doubles set according to the following schedule:

The top 4 teams will play semi final and finals.

Tuesday

Format: Doubles  (with different partners)

Costs: $5 for members or $10 for non-members, per night

Frequency of play: Theoretically 4 out of 7 weeks

Four teams of around 7 players, members or non-members.

Four of those players will play on the night, starting at 7.30pm.

Players are ranked 1, 2, 3 and 4 and three sets will be played between the two teams.

Around 18 matches are being played over the season, followed by a semi final (1 against 4 and 2 against 3) and final (winners of the semi finals)

Wednesday

Format: Singles

Costs: $5 for members or $10 for non-members, per night

Frequency of play: Almost every week

Four groups of up to 6 players exist, players are placed in groups based on ability.

A round robin is played after which top 2 players in every group go up and bottom 2 players in every group go down.

At the end of the season quarter finals, semi finals and finals are being played. Starting times are 7.00pm and 8.30pm.

Thursday

Format: Doubles  (with fixed partner)                     

Costs: $5 for members or $10 for non-members, per night

Frequency of play: Almost every week.

Two groups of up to 8 teams, players are placed in groups based on ability.

A round robin is played and at the end of the year each group plays quarter finals, semi-final and final.

At times social rounds will be organized to mix and match players.

Junior Tennis - Saturday and/or Sunday morning

Format: Diverse

Costs: $20 ball money – must be a member of WHTC                        

Frequency of play: Weekly for 14 weeks in two seasons a year

Children are ranked according to ability in different types of competitions like Triples (similar as to Monday Night Tennis format) or Rubbers/Sets (Singles and Doubles with best of three sets).

Starting time is 8.00am on Saturday and 9.00am on Sunday.

In a competition of 8 different teams/clubs 14 rounds are being played with the top 4 teams playing semi final and finals.

Senior Tennis - Saturday afternoon

Format: Diverse

Costs: $25 ball money – must be a member of WHTC                        

Frequency of play: Weekly for 14 weeks in two seasons a year

Players are ranked according to ability in different types of competitions like Doubles (similar as to Tuesday Night Tennis format) or Rubbers/Sets (Singles and Doubles with best of three sets).

Starting time is 1.00pm on Saturday.

In a competition of 8 different teams/clubs 14 rounds are being played with the top 4 teams playing semi final and finals.

Midweek men (Veterans) - Wednesday morning

Format: Doubles  (with different partners)

Costs: approx $2 ball money per wk – must be a member of WHTC                                                   

Frequency of play: Weekly for 15 weeks in two seasons a year followed by Semi finals, Prelim and Final

Played on Wednesday mornings: 9.30am – 12.30pm (approx).

Open aged: from 20’s to 70’s.

Five grades catering to all standards in a competition of 5-6 different teams/clubs.

Sets are first to 8 games.

Players are ranked and six sets are played between the two teams.

Each team fields 4 players, but 5 can be used.

Two to Three sets of doubles per player (depending if 4 or 5 players are playing) per match on 2 courts.

Midweek ladies - Thursday morning

Format: Doubles  (with different partners)

Costs: $15 ball money – must be a member of WHTC                        

Frequency of play: Weekly for 14 (or 15 or 16) weeks in two seasons a year

In a WDTA (Waverley District Tennis Association) competition of 8 different teams/clubs four players will play on Thursday, starting at 9.30am.

Players are ranked 1, 2, 3 and 4 and three sets will be played between the two teams.

Round Robin followed by semi final and Grand Final.
